The baskets are made in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana’s tourism hub. They are made by the Hambukushi, a minority group, that lives in the north western part of Botswana. Each basket is made using palm leaves from the Hyphaene petersiana (Mokola in Sestswana) tree.
Bits of bark or roots of other trees are boiled in water together with the palm leaves to extract a dye which colours the palm. Once the palm leaves are dyed into different colors, the weaving process starts.
Hours or weeks are put into making each basket with each process being intricate and a special part of the maker. The patterns also have a story to tell. If you love art and history, then enjoy the experience of owning one of these baskets.
